From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pəw (price) (whence the verb Pela pʰau³⁵ (expensive)), with a nominaliser ''a³¹-'' added. Cognate with Burmese အဖိုး (a.hpui:, price), Old Chinese (OC *puːʔ), Sichuan Yi (pu, price), Tangut 𗗦 (/*¹pʰə/, price), Tshobdun tə́-pʰu, Drung aŋ³¹ pɯ⁵³ (price) and Jingpho hpu (price, expensive). Compare Lhao Vo aphug', Zaiwa apau and Lianghe Achang a³¹pʰau³⁵.
